Hundreds of travelers visit Cambodia for holidays and love visiting the Angkor Wat Temple. This complex is on par with the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the Eiffel Tower in France, and Hagia Sophia in Turkey in terms of historical significance. It is the country’s most well-known monument and Cambodia’s most visit landmark.

The name Angkor Wat comes from the Khmer language and means “Temple City” This magnificent complex of temples was given this name because it was built and intended to be the official temple of the kingdom. Hundreds of tourists visit the temple each year while on vacation in Cambodia.

Angkor Wat History

Angkor Wat is the UNESCO World Heritage site, covers 162.6 hectares. It was built during the reign of Suryavarman II at the beginning of the 12th century (1113-1150). A quincunx of towers (a group of five towers, with the central tower being the highest – 61 meters) stands in the heart of Angkor Wat, with 398 stone rooms. All of the stone arches, roofs, and pillars have structural elements that are similar to those seen in wood architecture.

The initial purpose of the Angkor Wat was to honor Vishnu, a well-known Hindu god. Following that, as a magnificent contribution, a beautiful Buddhism Temple was erected to the compound. The temple complex of Angkor Wat is regarded as one of the outstanding examples of Khmer architecture, and it is depicted on the country’s flag. This is in addition to being a popular tourist site that attracts a large number of visitors to Cambodia throughout their vacations.

Angkor Wat Complex

The Angkor Wat Complex is remarkable for putting together two key outlines of Khmer architecture: the mountain temple and the galleried temple, which was built later and was inspired by old Hindu architectural styles and outlines. The temple was built to depict Mount Mero, which is said to be the home of gods in Hindu mythology.

The Angkor Wat outer gate is pretty stunning. It has a width of 1024 meters and a height of 4.5 meters. In addition, a 190-meter-wide water trench has been constructed. In each of the four directions, the temple features four main gates. With three ruined towers, the Western gate, which was the direction wherein the temple’s structures were directed, is the most majestic.

The temple has three main galleries that lead to the central tower and is built on a higher piece of land than the location where it was built. Each gallery level is higher than the one before it. The first outside gallery is 215 by 187 meters in size. Instead of towers, it has a lot of marquees at its corner. This gallery leads to the complex’s Buddhism hall, which is quite impressive.

“Travelers from all over the world who come to Cambodia for vacations are always eager to see the country’s most important historical sites. Taking our Vespa tour to the Angkor Off-road will make you a lasting memory, we’ll take you to see the less-known temple beyond the main road. We promised to return to the charms and mysteries from the tour to Angkor Wat.”
